Selection Policy

General Principles

The selection criteria / process is designed to reflect the two following points :-

·       PBSC is a competitive swimming club

·       Through competitive success the club will grow in size / strength and retain / attract good quality swimmers and coaches

Selection Criteria

Selection is primarily based on times, although this is not the sole criteria as many other factors may be taken into account, such as :-

·       Welfare of the swimmer

a)     Fitness

b)     Current Form

·       Behaviour / Reliability

a)     Can the swimmer be relied upon to turn up

b)     Can the swimmer be trusted to behave

·       Standard of Competition

a)     Event grading

b)     Strength of known competition

c)     Standard of judging

·       Competition Rules

a)     Limits on number of events that can be swum

b)     Age restrictions

c)     Time bands

d)     Any other restrictions on the eligibility of swimmers eg novice status

·       Eligibility

a)     As determined by ASA age restriction rules

b)     In accordance with the relevant league rules

·       Timing of Events

a)     Swimmers may need recovery time between events

b)     Weaker swimmers times may deteriorate during a gala

·       Two Swims Minimum

a)     A swimmer will not normally be selected just for one swim, if for whatever reason it is necessary to select a swimmer for just one race, the swimmer / parent will be informed before the gala.

·       Type of Gala / Other Galas

a)     Open Meet relays – priority will be given to those present at the gala

b)     Other galas ± 1 or 2 days

·       Siblings

Whether a brother or sister is swimming is not taken into account, and it is therefore quite common for families to be split on occasions when more than one team is fielded.

Differential Rule

In the vast majority of cases the swimmer with fastest recorded time will be selected but when one swimmer is fastest in more events than they can swim (due to gala rules or the timing of events), the time differentials between that swimmer and the next fastest swimmers are taken into account.  So that the fastest swimmer will swim those events at which they have the largest difference between them and the next fastest eligible swimmer.

Relay Selection

Selection for relays is as per the policy above, for freestyle relays it is custom to swim the fastest swimmer last and the second fastest first.  This may be amended if :-

a)     A swimmer is in more than one relay to give them addition time to rest

b)     A swimmer is in more than one relay to avoid the need for the swimmer to walk back between races.

c)     A swimmer has a tendency to be too quick on take-overs in which case swimming the first leg may be a safer option.

d)     It is thought that by putting a slower but competitive swimmer last it may achieve better results.

Squadron selection will, if possible, be left until the gala when the swimmers with the fastest freestyle times at that gala (either relay split or freestyle individuals) will be selected.  The final decision on squadron selection is however with the coach present.

Selection Process

Initial Selection

The initial selection is notified to the Chief Coach before any swimmers are informed.  The Chief Coach has the authority to make any changes and can override any decision taken by the selection committee.  After informing swimmers further changes may have to be made depending upon availability and sickness.  Any changes are made by the selection committee and ratified by the Chief Coach.  Changes within two days of the gala (last minute changes) are made solely based upon the judgement of the Team Manager, although at least one other selector should be consulted if possible.

The coach and team manager present at the gala may make any reasonable changes at the gala on the day.

Notifying Swimmers

It is not the practice to post lists on the notice board as the team is often subject to change, few swimmers regularly look at the board and this could lead to disputes.  It is also not practice to inform swimmers before a gala of which events they will be swimming as in the past this has caused problems.

Although results will generally be posted on the board, copies sent to coaches / officials and club records publicised, it is not practice to publish lists of swimmers personal bests as this could give other clubs a competitive advantage.
